The earliest Christian pilgrims desired to visit the places where Jesus and his apostles walked earth. This required journeying on foot to the Holy Land of Jerusalem, a relatively easy endeavor in the 4th century, when the Roman empire still unified the Mediterranean world. Major theologians of the time, including St. Jerome and St. Augustine, recommended spiritual journeys as a retreat from worldly concerns. The early Franciscans promoted pilgrimages to the Holy Land and even obtained and protected the most holy sites still in existence today.
