After 15 years as the 2nd Bishop of Mendi in Papua New Guinea’s Southern Highlands, Capuchin Steven Reichert has taken his new position as 5th Archbishop of Madang on the country’s north coast. Archbishop Francisco Montecillo Padilla, apostolic nuncio to PNG, installed Reichert in Madang’s Holy Spirit Cathedral on Feb. 2. A Kansas native, Reichert was ordained a priest in 1969 and has been in PNG since 1970. He has previously served also as pastor of Pomberel and Tari, teacher at the nation’s major seminary near Port Moresby, and superior of all the Capuchins in PNG. Reichert is the seventh bishop to serve in Madang since 1922.
